Director David R. Ellis combines the animals-run-amok scenario of his Snakes on a Plane with the 3-D carnage of his The Final Destination and voilà, we have Shark Night 3D! And now we also have a trailer for the September 2 film, which looks like it could be dumb fun, though probably neither as dumb nor as fun as this.

The Ward, the legendary John Carpenter‘s eagerly anticipated return to feature film direction (his first effort since 2001’s Ghosts of Mars), has struggled to find US distribution (it’s already come and gone in the UK), but now Arc Entertainment is scheduling a limited theatrical run for the film starting July 8. A list of theaters has yet to be released, but those of you who can’t wait that long for the haunted hospital flick will be able to catch it on demand starting June 8.

Edward James Olmos is the latest high-profile addition to the Dexter cast for Season 6, on the heels of Colin Hanks and Mos Def. According to Deadline, Olmos will play a "brilliant, charismatic professor of religious studies," a description that, combined with Hanks' role of "a highly intelligent expert on ancient artifacts," makes you wonder where the plot this fall will lead. Some sort of ancient religious cult perhaps? With shooting just beginning this week, we won't find out for sure until September.

Monsters 2 Headed into Production with Bigger Budget, New Directors

Monsters

The acclaimed little 2010 indie creature feature Monsters is going the blockbuster route: a big-budget sequel. In this case, though, “big budget” is a very relative term, seeing as how the original cost, by some estimates, less than $50,000 (and by other estimates, as much as $500,000). Monsters 2, meanwhile, will carry a price tag in the $5 million range, meaning we’ll probably get to see more monsters, but it will be interesting to see if that means the drama-cum-travelogue tone of the original will give way to a more action-oriented sequel.

The Violent Kind is an ambitious little flick that basically tries to blend four different movies into one. Unfortunately, none of them is particularly interesting, and none of them blend particularly well together. Read about it in my review of The Violent Kind.

They’re All Gonna Laugh at You! A Carrie Remake on the Way

Carrie

It’s already had a stage play adaptation, a TV movie adaptation and a sequel, but Brian DePalma’s 1976 flick Carrie is now officially getting the big-screen remake treatment. Technically, you could call it another adaptation of Stephen King’s novel rather than a remake, but that would take all the fun out of complaining about yet another remake. [Insert ironically generic “Why can’t Hollywood come up with original ideas?” statement here.]
