Audiences perhaps couldn't grasp the nature of the action-horror hybrid Drive Angry (and I don't blame them), as it stumbled across the finish line in its opening weekend, earning only an estimated $5.1 million. This was good enough for only ninth place and was all the more measly when you account for the elevated ticket prices for 3-D movies. You have to wonder if this bodes poorly for Ghost Rider 2. Final numbers are due late Monday.

Nicolas Cage has become an A-list go-to guy for B-movies, and Drive Angry is his latest schlock-fest. On the bright side, it's better than Season of the Witch, but anyone expecting any level of substance or intelligence might end up viewing it angry. Read about it in my review of Drive Angry.

Two intriguing horror-themed comic book adaptations appear one step closer to hitting the big screen. First up: Preacher, the controversial Vertigo comic that ran from 1995 to 2000 and told the story of a small-town preacher possessing the supernatural power of an angel-demon offspring, is now in the hands of director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, I Am Number Four). Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) had previously signed on to direct but left the film in limbo last year when he was hired for the next James Bond picture.
