It takes a little more effort, but combing the art house theaters and the video store shelves can provide many more great horror films each year than merely waiting for the major releases in your local multiplex. Here are my choices for the 20 best limited release/direct-to-video horror/suspense movies released in 2009.

This is about as quiet a release week as you’ll see all year as far as horror/suspense goes, with only four relatively obscure direct-to-video films.

Take a deep breath, zombie fanboys; it’s apparently going to happen. Natalie Portman will fight zombies — though probably not in a Padmé Amidala midriff-baring white jumpsuit. She’s set to star in (and produce, alongside The Box‘s Richard Kelly, amongst others) the upcoming adaptation of the trendsetting “mashup” novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a spin on the Jane Austen classic that places the story in an alternate reality in which zombies (and apparently a ninja or two) roam the countryside. Portman will play the main protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. No word on a release date, but since the actress is currently filming the thriller Black Swan and then seems to be committed to the superhero flick Thor, I wouldn’t expect PaPaZ until 2011.

A bunch of pics from some films we’ll (hopefully) see in 2010: Splice, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (both playing at Sundance), The Descent 2 and Cabin Fever 2 (both possibly direct-to-video).

2009 was a good year for horror and suspense movies — more so amongst smaller releases, but even with films that received a wide theatrical distribution, there were some entertaining offerings. Here are my choices for best wide theatrical horror movies of 2009.
