Brad Anderson Takes Over for Schumacher on Serial Killer Thriller The Hive

The upcoming film The Hive, a not-exactly-”buzzed”-about thriller that seemed destined for uninspired, direct-to-video status, has just received an upgrade. Director Joel Schumacher — whose schizophrenic career has included strong entries like The Lost Boys, Phone Booth, Falling Down and A Time to Kill that have nearly been overshadowed by his two awful entries in the Batman franchise (Batman Forever and Batman & Robin) and whose recent releases has been dominated by flops (The Number 23) that never reached the theater (Blood Creek, Trespass, Twelve) — has dropped out of The Hive and replaced by Brad Anderson.

Top-Grossing Horror Movies of 2011

As we reflect on 2011, we think not only about the best horror/suspense movies of the year (here and here), but also about the most popular horror movies of the year. Sadly, as with everything in life, those two lists don’t necessarily match up, but genre purists should at least be comforted to see that the story of the year might be under-performing horror remakes like Fright Night, The Thing, Straw Dogs and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark — none of which cracked the top 10 genre flicks for the year. But what was number one? Find out in my list of the Top-Grossing Horror Movies for 2011.

Dennis Quaid headlines the thriller Beneath the Darkness, which hits theaters in limited release this Friday. But unfortunately, he’s about the only reason I could recommend this movie — and only for the biggest Quaid fans (Quaidheads?) at that. Read about it in my review of Beneath the Darkness.
