The story of a mismatched couple — a disgraced magazine reporter and an antisocial young hacker — teaming up to solve a 40-year-old disappearance, the murder mystery The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has left its native Sweden and is poised to land on American soil. It plays this week at Austin’s South by Southwest Film Festival and opens in about 30 cities nationwide on March 19 before expanding in the following weeks to more than 100 other locations.

It doesn’t come out until June 4, but in my book, Splice is already in the running for the best movie — horror or otherwise — of the summer of 2010. It played in the Sundance Film festival earlier this year and created enough buzz to be picked up by Warner Brothers, who unexpectedly announced a wide release planned for the start of the busy summer season — unusual for a horror film.

Horror movies tend to find their way into the winner’s — or is it loser’s? — circle at the “worst of” Golden Raspberry Awards every year, but this past weekend, horror and suspense movies went trophy-less, despite nominations for New Moon, Jennifer’s Body and Obsessed. The closest the genre came to “winning” was a special Worst Actress of the Decade award for Paris Hilton, in part for her work in House of Wax and Repo! The Genetic Opera.

It appears that even old standards like Alien are jumping on the 3-D bandwagon. A recent interview with the previously announced Alien prequel’s art director Roger Christian reveals that the plan is to shoot it in 3-D. My only hope that we won’t be bombarded with shots of alien jaws snapping directly into the camera is that Ridley Scott will be directing and will hopefully play down the gimmick factor. I’m afraid, though, that it will take a big-budget 3-D bomb to convince the studios that not EVERY movie has to use that technology.

Long-rumored and long shelved, a remake of the 1989 Stephen King adaptation Pet Sematary has come closer to fruition with the naming of Matt Greenberg as its writer. Greenberg has experience adapting King stories for the big screen, having written the screenplay for 2007’s excellent 1408, and he also has a long track record in the horror genre, Read more…
