It seems you can't go a year without a new demonic possession/exorcism movie hitting the big screen, and in the case of The Possession (releasing August 31), it will actually be the second major release of its kind in 2012 -- following the surprise hit The Devil Inside. The Possession revolves around estranged parents (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) who buy an antique box for their daughter, only to find that it contains an entity from Jewish folklore (a "dibbuk") that slowly takes control of her. The first trailer was just released, and while it doesn't look like it breaks any new ground in the possession sub-genre, it looks sufficiently creepy and visually appealing -- thanks to the capable hands of veteran Danish director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch, The Substitute). Last we heard of The Last Voyage of the Demeter -- which features the awesome concept of speculating what happened aboard the Russian ship that brought Dracula's coffin from Transylvania to England -- Ben Kingsley and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace were attached to star, with Austrian filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky (Anatomy) directing. But that was just one of many plans for the film in the decade since the script was written (by Season of the Witch's Bragi Schut). Directors Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, Red), Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th) and David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) have all been attached at one time or another, and we can only hope that the latest filmmaker to sign up -- The Descent's Neil Marshall -- will stick.

Say what you will about the thought of remaking Carrie, but the upcoming version from director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry) is pulling together a nice cast. First, Chloe Grace Moretz was hired to play the titular role of the telekinetic teen, and now Julianne Moore, who co-starred in another remake of an iconic horror film -- Psycho -- has agreed to star as Carrie's domineering mother. Moore was offered the role a couple of weeks ago, but only recently accepted, according to Deadline...

Entrance is an unusually quiet, slow-paced horror movie that lulls you into a near-coma before bludgeoning you with a shocking climax. It's one of those films that is best viewed knowing as little about it as possible, so to appreciate its full impact, you probably should NOT watch the trailer -- although ironically, the trailer might be the primary reason why you'd want to see this otherwise seemingly nondescript film. Read about it in my review of Entrance.

After weeks of uncertainty, word has finally come down on the fates of ABC's The River and The CW's The Secret Circle: neither of the first-year shows will return to their respective networks next season. The River's cancellation seemed inevitable, but fans can hold out a glimmer of hope that rumors of Netflix picking it up come to fruition. The Secret Circle seemed to have a better shot at renewal, but even though its sister show The Vampire Diaries is the top-rated show on The CW, that didn't earn the "teen witch" series enough mojo with the network to bring it back for a second season.
